The Spanish army occupied Tamsui in 1629 by going through Keelung. They built Fort San Domingo as the base for their colony in Northern Taiwan. In 1642, the Dutch who colonized Southern Taiwan advanced north, drove out the Spanish, and built a new fortress, which is the one that exists now. Due to the fact that Taiwan locals called the Dutch “Hung Mao” (the red-haired), the fortress is known to the Taiwanese as the Hung Mao Fortress.
The fortress was modestly repaired after Cheng Cheng-Kung drove out the Dutch in 1661.
After WWII, the Republic of China severed diplomatic relations with the United Kingdom and the fortress was passed through the hands of Australia and America until it was reclaimed by the Republic of China government in 1980. The fortress was renovated after it was graded as a class 1 national historical monument and is now open to the public.
